About SpriteBench

SpriteBench is a small, free workbench for indie game developers: the sprite-sheet utilities you reach for a dozen times a week, running entirely in the browser, with honest export data for the engines people actually use.

Why it exists

Professional texture packers are excellent and priced for studios. Hobbyists and game-jam teams mostly need five things — pack, cut, GIF conversion, animation preview, pixel conversion — without installing anything, creating an account, or uploading artwork to a stranger's server. That is the whole product. The AI generator is being added as a clearly-labelled Beta, with its limits stated on its own page rather than buried.

How it is built

The site is a static build: no application server, no database. The packing layout uses the MaxRects algorithm; image work is done with the browser's Canvas API; GIF decoding and encoding, ZIP export and template rendering are handled by small open-source libraries listed below. Because everything runs on your machine, our running cost is near zero — which is why the tools can be free without watermarks or accounts.

We deliberately do not use AGPL-licensed code in this build, so the site's own source stays simple to license. Sample sprites on this site were produced by our own AI test pipeline and are labelled "Sample" wherever they appear.
